Did Jesus restrict his ministry to only the synagogue? Not at all. Jesus ministered everywhere that people were. And since most people are involved in the work world, then it makes sense that you should have ministry mindset in the marketplace.
If you limit yourself to thinking of ministry only taking place in the church, then you will miss out on most of the opportunities to help people where they are. And you will miss out on Jesus’ model of ministry too.
Here’s how you can incorporate a ministry mindset into what you do every day at work.
1. Be excellent.
One way to have a ministry mindset at work is to do what you do with excellence. As the Scripture says, whatever you do, do it heartily, as unto the Lord and not unto men—knowing that the Lord will give you the reward of the inheritance, for you serve the Lord Christ (Colossians 3:23-24).
You honor others when you give your all. And 1 Peter 2:17 tells us we should honor everyone. And that includes who you come in contact with through your work.
Your excellence at work is a spiritual priority. Because whatever you do for even the least of these you are doing for Him (Matthew 25:40).
2. Honor authority.
You can please God with a ministry mindset by submitting to those in authority over you (1 Peter 2:13-15). Even if you have a bad boss (1 Peter 2:18).
God is honored when you continue to submit willingly to your boss, even if you have been wronged by your boss (1 Peter 2:20).
When you are obedient, you are being what people like to see in others. And your boss may start to change because of you. But only because your boss saw you do it first.
3. Serve with joy.
Another way to have a ministry mindset is to work with joy. People will notice the way you act when you do your job with an attitude of rejoicing (Philippians 4:4-5).
When you cultivate an attitude of joy, the words you speak will minister to those around you (1 Peter 3:8-9). And they will appreciate you for it.
Let the words of your mouth spring from a heart of joy and affirm those around you. God will be glorified when you do.
Let all that you do be summarized by doing unto others as you would have them do unto you (Matthew 7:12). Your workplace will be transformed by your ministry mindset as a result. And so will you.
