You Will Be the Same Person in Ten Years — Unless You Change Three Things
As you think through what you want to do differently in the new year, it’s important to think through how you will change you in 2020. You can’t change your circumstances until you change yourself.
Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is insanity. Do not do that to yourself. If you want to have different results, you must change you first.
You will be the same person in ten years that you are right now—unless you change these three things.
1. The books you read
To change you, first adjust your thinking. The most effective way to positively adjust your thinking is by being exposed to good ideas. And the best way to introduce yourself to good ideas is by reading good books.
By reading good books, you will fill your mind with what you want it filled with. In this hyper-marketed culture we live in, you are constantly being assaulted by ideas. Only by reading good books can you fill your mind with the right stuff.

2. The people you meet
To change you, allow yourself to meet new people. You will become like the people you surround yourself with.
Think through what kind of people you want to meet. What kind of people do you hang around now? How is the person you want to become different from them? What kind of people do you need to meet in order to become the person you want to be?
The best way to meet the right people is to be where they will be. Where do these people congregate? Where do you have to go to meet them? Once you figure that out, go find them an get to know them. And eventually you will become like them.
3. The goals you set
To change the person you will become, set new goals for yourself. When you set goals, set big goals. As Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said,
“Dream no small dreams, for they have no power to move the hearts of men.”
To reach your goals, allow your habits to change first. As Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said,
Sow a thought and you reap an action;
sow an act and you reap a habit;
sow a habit and you reap a character;
sow a character and you reap a destiny.
It’s the little changes you make every day that will change you. And it all starts with reading the right books, meeting the right people, and setting the right goals.
