Why do you make money in your business? We all know why money is important. But why is it important to you?
Is your net income your scoreboard? Are you just trying to run up the score with your profitability? Or is there a deeper reason why you want to make money?
Here are three perspectives you can consider as you think about why you make money. Which one describes you?
1. Do you deserve it?
Perhaps you feel that you deserve the increase from your business. After investing into your business and working the long hours, you might feel you are owed this money.
I can understand this perspective. It seems to resonate with me. But I’m not sure that it resonates with God.
God says He has given you the ability to produce wealth (Deuteronomy 8:17-18a). So it is not your hand that makes you money, but His.
2. Do you use it to serve others?
Perhaps you feel that God has given you the increase from your business to serve others. After all, they were the ones who helped you get to this point.
Your company is where it is today because your investors applied their wealth and your employees contributed their time. And your company has benefited from doing business with your suppliers and your customers. So perhaps you think they should share in the blessings you have received.
You are certainly honoring God if you love your investors, employees, suppliers, and customers as yourself (Galatians 5:14). But what if God has something even more specific He wants you to do.
3. Is it a means to pursue God’s vision for your life?
God gave Abram the ability to produce wealth not just to bless his household. God wanted to bless him so that all families of the earth would be blessed (Genesis 12:1-3). Because God had something specific He wanted Abraham to do.
God can use your obedience in serving Him through your business to bless countless people. But that requires listening to God and hearing how He wants to use you.
You can make money for a lot of different reasons. But why exactly does God want you to make money?
