Why Giving Thanks to God Changes Everything

Nov 20, 2016

It’s so easy in today’s world to take things for granted.  The food we eat.  The clothes we wear.  The place we live.  But we ought not think that way.  We should be giving thanks to God for what we have.

I don’t say that to guilt you into being grateful.  I’m not trying to make you give to those less fortunate than you.  I’m saying that your life will be better if you take more time for giving thanks to God.

Here are three reasons why giving thanks to God changes your entire outlook.

1. You benefit from giving thanks to God more than He does.

We may think that God needs us to give thanks to Him for what He provides for us.  But in fact, it’s the other way around.

We need to give thanks to keep our heads straight.  If we don’t thank God for what we have, then we complain about what we have.  Or we covet what we don’t have.

If we don’t thank God for what we have, then we complain about what we have. Or we covet what we don’t have.

2. Giving thanks to God draws us closer to Him.

The more we have, the more we need to thank God.  Giving thanks to God recalibrates our perspective when times are good.  It helps us see that He will provide for our needs.

We especially need to thank God when times are hard.  When we give God thanks, we remember that He is a good Father and He wants the best for us.  Thanking Him for what we do have will take the focus off of ourselves and put it on God.

3. Giving thanks to God reminds us of what is truly important.

When we focus on ourselves and our perceptions of what is happening in our lives, we don’t see the blessings that are right in front of our faces.

God has given us life.  He has given us family.  And He will give us a new life and a new family in the new Jerusalem (Revelation 21:1-3).

We will benefit from an attitude of gratitude.  Even if we have lost loved ones.  Even if we have experienced tragedy in our lives.  Because someday God will wipe away every tear and there will be no more pain (Revelation 21:4).

Regardless of what is going on in our lives, God will make all things new (Revelation 21:5).  Someday we will reign with Him (Revelation 5:10).  And for that, we should be giving thanks to God.
