The Three Steps to Personal Transformation
The source of your spiritual health is your thoughts. The thoughts that enter your head will either lift you up or bring you down. So the key to your spiritual health is intentional thinking.
Many people do not consider their ways. They do not take inventory of their thoughts. And therefore reap the consequences of what Socrates called an “unexamined life.”
Romans 12:2 says to be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Here’s how you can take that verse to heart and improve your spiritual health through your intentional thinking.
According to Strong’s concordance, the Greek word for “transformed” in that verse is metamorphoo. It means to change, transfigure, or transform. In fact, this Greek word is where the English word “metamorphosis” comes from. And Merriam-Webster says the word metamorphosis means “a change of physical form, structure, or substance especially by supernatural means.”
This transformation that Paul is talking about in this verse is a spiritual transformation. But it is born out in an intellectual transformation. And it should transform how we act. Because your thoughts will form your actions, and your actions will form your habits, and your habits will form your character.
According to Strong’s Concordance, the Greek word for “renewing” in that verse is anakainosis. This Greek word means to renovate. And Merriam-Webster says the word renovate means “to restore to a former better state (as by cleaning, repairing, or rebuilding).”
When you renew your thinking, you are renovating your thinking. You are restoring it to a better state. You are cleansing yourself of the sin that darkens your mind. So you can be made more and more into the image of God (2 Corinthians 3:18).
According to Strong’s Concordance, the Greek word for “mind” in that verse is nous. This Greek word means your intellect. Your mind is the seat of your desires, your feelings, and your thoughts. Your mind refers to all of the mental processes you are capable of performing.
When you are transformed by the renewing of your mind, you are allowing your desires, your feelings, and your thoughts to be supernaturally restored to what God intended for you to have. You undergo a spiritual metamorphosis by cleaning out the old mental processes and replacing them with how God thinks.
You will improve your spiritual health when you allow your desires, feelings, and thoughts to be more like God’s. And it all starts with intentional thinking.
